The 17th century entrepreneur, politician and diplomat from Brig was much more than just a successful merchant. He was regarded as a visionary with an extraordinary feel for economic connections and international relations. His influence extended far beyond the Alps to the great European royal houses and made him the most colorful figure in Valais history.
The Grand Stockalper wine line reflects precisely this spirit. It stands for vision, strength and independence. The wines should not only taste good, but also convey an attitude – straightforward, down-to-earth and deeply rooted in Valais.

The Cave de l’Hospice de Salquenen
The roots of the Cave de l’Hospice de Salquenen go back to the Middle Ages. As early as 1325, the Knights of St. John settled in Salgesch and founded a hostel for pilgrims and travelers. Back then, wine played a central role in everyday monastic life. It was a cultural asset, a commodity and an expression of the local terroir.
Even today, the Maltese cross in the Salgesch coat of arms is a reminder of this historic era. With the Cave de l’Hospice de Salquenen, Adrian and Diego Mathier are consciously tying in with this cultural heritage. The wines in the line are created with the aim of not only preserving history, but also making it a sensory experience.
Valais grape varieties with a clear origin
The Grand Stockalper line deliberately focuses on traditional Valais varieties. The focus is on Pinot Noir, Dôle blanche, Fendant and Johannisberg. These grape varieties have shaped the canton’s wine landscape for generations and are a particularly authentic reflection of its Alpine origins.

The white wines in the line also follow the same philosophy. The Dôle blanche is straightforward, juicy and has a subtle aroma.
