Claiment: A traditional family business from Maienfeld

The Stäger winery, run by Markus and Karin Stäger, is located in the historic center of Maienfeld in the Bündner Herrschaft. The estate comprises around four hectares of vines, spread over fourteen different plots in the Tschalär at 520 to 600 meters above sea level. The family has been connected to the region for generations and established the winery as such in the 1980s. With their passion and knowledge, the family’s ancestors laid the foundations for the current cultivation of the vineyards and shaped the importance of the vineyards for the quality of the wines. The long-lasting interplay of tradition, nature, organic practices and regional standards forms the foundation of today’s Stäger wines. As an experienced winegrower, Markus Stäger contributes his in-depth knowledge and experience, while his wife Karin takes care of the organization and management – together they shape the philosophy of the company.

Grape varieties, terroir and viticulture

Grapes such as Pinot Noir, Riesling-Silvaner, Chardonnay and Scheurebe (S88) thrive on the limestone and marl-rich, sun-favored soils. The plots, some of which are surrounded by traditional stone walls, make it possible to vinify expressively structured wines. Manual work and natural cultivation reduce yields in favor of concentration and freshness. Inspiration and experience from working at wineries in the Palatinate are incorporated into the natural cultivation and choice of grape varieties. This results in wines of great finesse that authentically reflect the soil, climate and vintage.

Cellar art, style and figureheads

In the cellar, Markus Stäger combines specialist knowledge with intuition. He takes care to preserve the typical characteristics of the vineyard and the specific character of the vintage. Vinification is based on the natural development of the grapes – in a controlled manner, but without any artificial over-pressing. A central figurehead is the Pinot Noir Classique, a fresh, fruity red wine that combines elegance and structure and impresses on the palate with its balance of fruit, acidity and fine texture. In addition, white wines such as Riesling-Silvaner 2024 or Chardonnay, but also the aromatic Scheurebe S88, each with a little freshness and fine nuance, are important representatives of diversity in style and expression.

Vintage 2024 – freshness, fruit and finesse

The 2024 vintage was remarkable for the Stäger winery: a mild winter, delayed flowering with many consequences, a pleasant summer and cool nights in the fall led to a small but excellent quality harvest. The white wines are characterized by intense fruit and animating freshness. The Pinot Noir 2024 is dominated by colorful aromas, fine tannins, freshness, finesse and elegance – characteristics that particularly distinguish Stäger wines.

The wines of the 2024 vintage are bottled in 75 cl bottles; the limited number of bottles underlines the exclusivity of this special vintage.

Regional connection and passion

The winery stands for a sense of home: Bündner Herrschaft, Maienfeld, nature – all of which reflect the personality of the family. Their products are an expression of soil and tradition, processed with a focus on quality. The joy of wine is born in the vineyard, in the cellar and is reflected in the style of the wines – clear, honest and appealing. This joy becomes part of the winegrowing community, goes far beyond labels, conveys identity and remains tangible in the long term.
