Named after Kaspar Jodok von Stockalper, one of the most important personalities in Valais history, these wines stand for origin, character and a clear stylistic claim. Created in collaboration with Diego Mathier and the Cave de l’Hospice de Salquenen, the line combines traditional grape varieties with an unmistakable signature.

Kaspar Jodok von Stockalper as inspiration

Few personalities have had such a lasting impact on Valais as Kaspar Jodok von Stockalper. The 17th century entrepreneur, politician and diplomat from Brig was much more than just a successful merchant. He was regarded as a visionary with an extraordinary feel for economic connections and international relations. His influence extended far beyond the Alps to the great European royal houses and made him the most colorful figure in Valais history.

The Grand Stockalper wine line reflects precisely this spirit. It stands for vision, strength and independence. The wines should not only taste good, but also convey an attitude – straightforward, down-to-earth and deeply rooted in Valais.

Kaspar Jodok von Stockalper – Photo from the Stockalper Museum archive

The Cave de l’Hospice de Salquenen

The roots of the Cave de l’Hospice de Salquenen go back to the Middle Ages. As early as 1325, the Knights of St. John settled in Salgesch and founded a hostel for pilgrims and travelers. Back then, wine played a central role in everyday monastic life. It was a cultural asset, a commodity and an expression of the local terroir.

Even today, the Maltese cross in the Salgesch coat of arms is a reminder of this historic era. With the Cave de l’Hospice de Salquenen, Adrian and Diego Mathier are consciously tying in with this cultural heritage. The wines in the line are created with the aim of not only preserving history, but also making it a sensory experience.

Valais grape varieties with a clear origin

The Grand Stockalper line deliberately focuses on traditional Valais varieties. The focus is on Pinot Noir, Dôle blanche, Fendant and Johannisberg. These grape varieties have shaped the canton’s wine landscape for generations and are a particularly authentic reflection of its Alpine origins.

Fendant and Dôle blanche

The white wines in the line also follow the same philosophy. The Dôle blanche is straightforward, juicy and has a subtle aroma. The Fendant, on the other hand, displays the typical mineral tension for which Valais is internationally renowned. Both wines focus less on loud opulence and more on character and drinkability.

© Valais_Wallis Promotion – Vineyards near Salgesch – Photographer Christian Pfammatter

Johannisberg as a Valais classic

Johannisberg has always had a special status in the Upper Valais. In the Grand Stockalper line, it is full-bodied, aromatic and yet precise. Ripe fruit aromas are combined with a pleasant freshness and give the wine its typical balance.

Pinot Noir with Valaisan depth

The Pinot Noir from the Grand Stockalper line is not overloaded or technically slick. Instead, the focus is on the fruit, accompanied by fine spice, alpine freshness and a precise structure. The dry Valais soils and intense sunshine give the wine substance and clarity.

A new style from Salgesch

With Grand Stockalper, the Cave de l’Hospice de Salquenen is consciously pursuing an independent path. Instead of relying on heavy extraction or demonstrative elegance, the focus is on origin and authenticity. The wines are grounded, spirited and unadulterated.

Together with the La Folie and Tour des Sorciers lines, this creates a new generation of Valais wines that tell stories and at the same time are clearly anchored in the modern understanding of wine. Each wine has its own personality, but remains true to the common claim: honest Valais character wines with depth and recognition value.

©Valais_Wallis Promotion – Vineyards in Central Valais – Christian Pfammatter

Valais as a formative force

Valais is one of the most exciting wine regions in Europe. The combination of alpine climate, intense sunshine and steep terraced vineyards creates ideal conditions for wines full of character. In Salgesch in particular, calcareous soils, dry air and large temperature differences come together – conditions that have a decisive influence on structure and aroma.

The wines in the Grand Stockalper range clearly reflect this origin. They are not interchangeable, but tell of landscape, history and craftsmanship.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about the Grand Stockalper wine line

What is the Grand Stockalper wine line?

Grand Stockalper is a Valais wine line from the Cave de l’Hospice de Salquenen.
