Fehr & Engeli winery: a success story in the canton of Aargau

The Fehr & Engeli winery in Ueken, in the middle of the idyllic Fricktal valley, is one of the most traditional wineries in German-speaking Switzerland. Its history began in the 1960s, when Bruno Fehr and Emil Engeli took over an overgrown plot of vines with a great deal of pioneering spirit and gradually turned it into a flourishing winery. Engeli Weinbau played a central role in the development of the business and stands for the combination of tradition, regional ties and innovative strength in viticulture. Their passion and love of experimentation laid the foundations for today’s success. A small, almost improvised project grew into a business that today stands for quality, craftsmanship and innovative spirit – Fehr Engeli Weinbau is synonymous with tradition and innovation in Swiss viticulture.

Development, region and team: from dream to established brand

The Fricktal, a gently rolling landscape between Aargau and Basel, offers ideal conditions for viticulture with its mild climate and limestone-rich soils. Wines with a clear structure, fine acidity and authentic aromas are produced here. Under the management of Urs Gasser, who took over the winery in 2004, Fehr & Engeli has developed into one of the most important producers in Aargau. He is supported by a dedicated team of experienced winemakers and cellar masters who rebalance the interplay between nature and craftsmanship each vintage. Today, the company employs several skilled workers and apprentices, who together ensure the consistently high quality of the wines.

Urs Gasser: The oenologist behind the success

Urs Gasser, who grew up in Hallau, is regarded as one of the formative minds of modern Swiss viticulture. After training as a wine cooper and studying engineering in Wädenswil, he initially took over responsibility for the vineyard at Fehr & Engeli and later for the entire production. With a flair for ripeness, terroir and ageing, he succeeds in making wines that are both powerful and harmonious. His style is characterized by clarity, structure and the conviction that a good wine needs time to develop its personality.

Sustainability and the future

Urs Gasser and his team focus on sustainable viticulture, natural cultivation and modern cellar technology. The aim is to ensure the high quality of the wines while protecting the environment. The company remains true to its philosophy: quality before quantity, craftsmanship before routine. In this way, Fehr & Engeli will remain synonymous with Swiss viticulture at the highest level in the future.

Sites and terroir in the Aargau Fricktal

The vines of the Fehr & Engeli winery grow in Ueken, Kaisten, Oeschgen and other municipalities around Frick. Herznach is also one of the most important wine-growing areas in the Fricktal, known for its typical grape varieties such as Müller-Thurgau and wines full of character. The chalky soil provides minerality and expression, while the valley’s sheltered location offers the grapes optimal ripening conditions. The Pinot varieties in particular benefit from the cool nights, which preserve freshness and acidity. The vines are kept in balance through targeted care and sustainable cultivation, which is reflected in the elegance of the wines.

Pinotage – a Swiss specialty

A real trademark of the Fehr & Engeli winery is Pinotage, a grape variety that originated in South Africa. Urs Gasser was the first winegrower to cultivate it in Switzerland. The grape variety produces strong, dense red wines with intense fruit aromas and soft tannins. An alcohol content of around 13.5 to 14.5% is typical of Pinotage, which gives the wine style additional fullness and structure. The Fricktal Pinotage in particular impresses with notes of dark berries, spices and an elegant, lingering finish. The wine is matured in small wooden barrels, which gives the wine additional depth and complexity.

Fricktal Pinotage Barrel No. 5 – a wine with character

The Pinotage Barrel No. 5 exemplifies the philosophy of the estate: craftsmanship, precision and terroir. The grapes come from the estate’s best plots and are carefully selected. After fermentation, the wine rests in selected barriques, where it gains structure and balance. On the palate, it develops notes of cassis, smoke and vanilla, supported by a fine acidity and silky tannins. This wine shows that the canton of Aargau produces wines with impressive personality, even by international standards.

White wines with elegance and freshness

In addition to the red wines, Fehr & Engeli’s white wines also impress with their clear lines and character. Müller-Thurgau, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling-Silvaner are vinified using modern cellar technology and great craftsmanship. The white wines are characterized by freshness, delicate aromas and balanced acidity. They develop their full potential particularly when paired with regional dishes – such as cheese, fish or light vegetable dishes – as these dishes harmonize perfectly with the white wines.

Wine and cuisine: perfect companions from the Fricktal

The wines from Fehr & Engeli are versatile food companions. The Pinotage harmonizes perfectly with game, lamb or mature hard cheese, while the white wines are ideal with light dishes and aperitifs. In the regional gastronomy around Frick, Aarau and Basel, they are an integral part of the wine lists. This combination of viticulture and cuisine is what makes the Aargau terroir so appealing. The characterful wines from Fehr & Engeli offer an exciting taste experience, especially for wine lovers, and are a special recommendation.
